CONDITIONS FOR ENTERING AND RESIDING IN THE PRINCIPALITY *

When visiting the Principality or staying there for a period that does not exceed three months, no particular formality is required apart from being in possession of the documents that are required when entering French territory.

On the other hand, any foreigner wishing to stay in Monaco for a period that exceeds three months or set up residence there, will have to apply for a Monegasque residence permit, the procedure for which shall differ depending on the applicant’s country of origin:

1/ Nationals of one of the member states of the European Economic Area do not need to apply for a residence visa in Monaco. In order to obtain a Monegasque residence permit, they must contact the Direction de la Sûreté Publique de Monaco (Section des Résidents) (Public Security Directorate in Monaco – Residents’ Section). They will be asked for various documents such as their passport, civil status certificates, extract from police records or equivalent document, attestation of employment endorsed by the Principality’s Employment Office or a bank testimonial proving sufficient means of livelihood, recent photographs, medical certificate, registered lease agreement or title deed...

2/ Nationals of a State that does not belong to the European Economic Area and who do not reside in France (or who have been residing in France for less than one year) must first of all apply for a residence visa from the nearest French Consulate to their place of residence (or to their last place of residence before France for persons residing there for less than one year). They will then be able to apply for a Monegasque residence permit from the Direction de la Sûreté Publique in Monaco (Residents’ Section), see paragraph 1.

3/ Persons who have been residing in France for more than one year must submit the file for their residence application in the Principality to the French Consulate General in Monaco where they will be asked to provide, amongst others, an application, a personal data sheet, a photocopy of their residence permit in France and a photocopy of their passport.
